What is the TEF Exam?
What is TEF?
The Test d'Évaluation de Français (TEF) is an international exam created in 1998 by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris. It assesses French language proficiency through five sections: written comprehension, oral comprehension, written expression, oral expression, and vocabulary & structure (grammar).
TEF is essential for various administrative procedures such as Canadian immigration, obtaining French nationality, or accessing Francophone university programs.

What is the TCF Exam (Canada and Quebec)
The Test de Connaissance du Français (TCF) is an official French language proficiency test administered by France Éducation International, under the French Ministry of National Education. It is designed for non-native speakers who wish to assess and certify their level of French for academic, professional, or immigration purposes.
The TCF evaluates language skills across six levels (A1 to C2), following the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). There are several versions of the test tailored for different needs:
-
TCF Tout Public (TCF TP) – for general language assessment, study, and work.
-
TCF Intégration, Résidence et Nationalité (TCF IRN) – for immigration and French nationality applications.
-
TCF Canada (TCF CA) – required for economic immigration or citizenship in Canada.
-
TCF Québec (TCF QC) – for permanent immigration to Quebec.
The test results are valid for two years and provide an attestation of language level, recognized by educational institutions, employers, and immigration authorities worldwide.
