Take the TCF Exam with The French Academy

The Test de connaissance du français (TCF) is an internationally recognized assessment designed to evaluate French language proficiency across various contexts, including academic pursuits, professional endeavors, and personal enrichment. Developed by the Centre international d'études pédagogiques (CIEP) under the French Ministry of Education, the TCF aligns with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), providing a standardized measure of language ability.

TCF Structure and Modules

The TCF comprises mandatory and optional components to assess a candidate's comprehensive language skills.

Mandatory Tests:

- Listening Comprehension: Evaluates the ability to understand spoken French through multiple-choice questions.
- Reading Comprehension: Assesses understanding of written French texts via multiple-choice questions.
- Proficiency in Language Structures: Tests grammar and vocabulary knowledge through multiple-choice questions.

Optional Tests:
Writing Skills: Measures the capacity to express ideas in written French.

Speaking Skills: Assesses oral proficiency through an interview with an examiner.

Candidates can choose to take only the mandatory tests or include one or both optional tests, depending on their specific objectives.

Scoring and CEFR Correlation

TCF scores correspond to CEFR levels, ranging from A1 (beginner) to C2 (proficient). Each skill assessed receives a separate score, which collectively determine the overall proficiency level. The scoring breakdown is as follows:

  • A1 (Beginner): 100–199 points

  • A2 (Elementary): 200–299 points

  • B1 (Intermediate): 300–399 points

  • B2 (Upper Intermediate): 400–499 points

  • C1 (Advanced): 500–599 points

  • C2 (Proficient): 600–699 points

For example, achieving a score between 400 and 499 points places the candidate at the B2 level, indicating an upper-intermediate proficiency in French.
