The TEF, officially recognized by the French Ministry of National Education since 2004, is an essential tool for measuring the language skills of foreign students. This test, mandatory for anyone wishing to enroll in an undergraduate program at a French university, thoroughly assesses both written and spoken French skills. It plays a crucial role in ensuring that candidates possess a sufficient level of language proficiency to follow academic courses in French. In addition to confirming their ability to understand and communicate effectively in a university environment, the TEF is also a determining factor for their admission and success in higher education in France.
What Does the TEF Include?
The test consists of several modular sections that assess all language skills:
Reading Comprehension:
60 minutes – 40 questions
Oral Comprehension:
40 minutes – 40 questions
Written Expression: 60 minutes – 2 subjects to cover
Vocabulary and Syntax: 30 minutes – 40 questions
The entire test spans several sessions, providing ample time to thoroughly assess candidates' language skills across different aspects of the French language.
TEF Score for Studying

This minimum score certifies the candidates' ability to master the French language, particularly in understanding complex texts and writing in French.
